Mega Projects
Huntsville continues to prosper, and its growing fortunes have resulted in massive developments throughout the city. LinkedIn's Economic Graph Team conducted research and placed Huntsville as the 5th most resilient technological hub in the entire United States from 2019 to 2021.
While Huntsville is known for space and defense, the city has grown in all areas of technology. As Mazda and Toyota set up an assembly plant in Huntsville, the automotive industry is set to experience a boom on technology. Huntsville also entered the top ten in Milken's Institute's Best Performing Cities Index in 2021.
Projects Under Way in Huntsville
As part of 'The Big Picture' master plan by the City of Huntsville, multiple projects are currently under development to reshape Huntsville's landscape and to accommodate the city's growth.
New Municipal Complex
The city is relocating its municipality all into one building. The new municipal complex will house all of the city's various departments across six floors. The complex will also feature a five-level underground parking space, while the old location will be earmarked for future construction.
Moreover, work on a new $86 million federal courthouse is also due to start shortly.
Constellation Huntsville
Another project under development at the intersection of Memorial Parkway and Clinton Avenue, Constellation Huntsville, is a private project that will glisten the downtown area. Constellation Huntsville will result in the creation of 219 new apartments and more restaurants and retailers. Other projects in the downtown area are also underway and include Hampton Inn and Suites, The Hilton Hotel, a parking garage, and the Eclipse apartments.
West Huntsville Highway 72 Business Corridor
West Huntsville Business Corridor is an initiative aimed to create and support 1,200 local small businesses along Highway 72. The initiative takes inspiration from Main Street Alabama, a program that helped start and support many small businesses. West Huntsville plans to revitalize the eight-mile strip by making it safer and more public-friendly, with restaurants and retail stores.
Moreover, the program aims to increase the prospects of real estate development in the area.
Huntsville Madison County Chamber
The Huntsville Madison County Chamber announced eight projects with a total investment of $71 million, which would create 510 jobs in late 2020. These projects involved Dynetics, adding 200 jobs; Torch Technologies, creating 120 jobs; Nippon Express USA, hiring 101 professionals; and Invariant Corporation, employing 23 employees. The eight projects are expected to conclude by 2022.
Northern Bypass Project
Construction for the Northern Bypass project is also underway. The project was designed to alleviate traffic congestion problems. It is being carried out in three phases, with the first phase involving demolition of buildings in the right-of-the-way and a utility relocation following in the next stage.
